A River Runs Through It
Carmel River in 3D
Friday, December 12, 2008
John Schweissinger of Monterey-based geospatial consulting company Turf Image Inc. created a 3D fly-through of the Carmel River from the coast to the headwaters, as it meanders upstream through urban centers and farmland. The YouTube video shows how the river is channeled in some places, dammed in others, but snakes more naturally in its Santa Lucia origins.
The project is intended as a tool for the Carmel River Steelhead Association, which advocates for the imperiled wild local fish. CRSA rescues juvenile steelhead from local streams in the dry months and criticizes California American Water Co. for its continued overpumping of the Carmel River.
