SHELBY LYNNE

One must wonder just how many people buying music today remember Dusty Springfield. One of pop’s best loved divas in the ‘60s, she had a series of hits penned by Burt Bacharach and others that should resonate today, but sadly they don’t. Given her unfortunate obscurity, why would the unpredictable and laconic songstress Shelby Lynne do a tribute album to Springfield? Well, one listen to these tunes and the answer is obvious.

A great song can stand on its own, and while Springfield’s producers surrounded her music with strings and voices, Lynne pursues a minimalist angle on the 10 songs included on Just a Little Lovin’. Letting the words and melodies float around the gentle piano, snare and soft guitar, Lynne’s voice is the purest instrument – full of emotion and power. Stark, hypnotic and captivating, this is one for those lonely nights, or when you’re wrapped in the arms of a lover.
