Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies evacuated some 75 residences and businesses beginning Saturday, June 21 between Partington Ridge and Graves Canyon in Big Sur—and the Basin Complex Fire rages on, along with other wildfires burning near King City and in south county. Get the the latest fire reports, maps, evacuation order and meeting information at the county’s fire information website. http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/PR_OES/PR_fire.htm Two years ago we reported, in a cover story by Deputy Editor Mark Anderson, that those responsible for controlling and preventing fire in Big Sur were concerned about the wet winter, dry brush, and extensive number of fallen trees resulting from sudden oak death syndrome. http://www.montereycountyweekly.com/archives/2006/2006-Sep-28/Article.cover_story/1/@@index The weather may not be cooperative as prevailing northwest winds — up to 15 knots during the night — blow through the region. Coastal fog in the early morning hours will make the area particularly smokey for remaining residents and emergency workers. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/getzfpzone.php?sid=mtr&zone=caz530
