The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of
Wow. I’ve just re-read your California Primary presidential endorsements [“Endorsements,” Jan. 31-Feb. 6]. The second paragraph gave a pretty good clue as to where your editorial board stands… “Republican field resembles a clown car,” and “Dems have two rock-star politicians to choose from.” You claim these stars are both so well qualified it was hard to make a choice, but you decided to go with the “dreamer,” Sen. Obama.
As I recall, Sen. Clinton won in California, but at this writing, it appears that she has lost most of her rock-star persona.
I recently saw a pollster on TV who asked some two dozen gathered Obama supporters to name a single significant thing he had done in the U.S. Senate. There was an embarrassing, complete and utter silence among the group.
You claimed to be sorry to be unable to endorse ANY Republican candidate, but did manage to slip in your dislike for President Bush. Even the New York Times was able to endorse Sen. McCain for president (and then tried, but failed, to destroy him with a phony front page story).
Seems the entire liberal print media has fallen in love with Sen. Obama, even though he is deemed to be the LEAST accessible of all the candidates to the press (Sen. McCain was named the MOST available).
I’m happy Sen. Obama “inspires” you with his “vision of hope and change,” “oratory,” and “dreams.”
As for me, I’d rather be inspired by past accomplishments. I see Sen. Obama as a young, well-spoken, nice-looking empty suit, and who, if elected, would do whatever the Democratic Congress told him to do.
Happy dreaming… My dreams seem to disappear when I awake in the morning. Yup, they just burst like all bubbles eventually do. – M.A. Lore | Salinas
Low Blow, Little Info
I am disappointed with the Weekly’s recent Squid column [“On the Bench,” Feb. 21-27] on the candidates for the open seat on our local Superior Court. It was unprofessional, mean-spirited, served no public purpose, provided no real information of value on the candidates and wasn’t even humorous.
While I support Tom Wills as the best candidate, I am offended by the comments made about all four candidates and the disparaging innuendos about the current bench.
Despite the Squid’s comments, Tom Wills would ably and gladly serve in the misdemeanor assignment where new judges traditionally start. He is the only candidate with extensive criminal and civil experience and best able to handle all the assignments of a state trial court judge.
Rather than reflecting on Mark Hood’s choice of suits, Todd Hornik’s choice of beverages, or Luma Serrano’s warm and fuzzy local connections, Squid could have noted that Hood and Hornik have little to no civil experience and Serrano has little experience in any area covered by our Superior Court. – Judge Kay T. Kingsley | Monterey
CORRECTION
In Squid Fry [“Who Do You Trust,” Feb. 28-March 5], Squid referred to Monterey County Planning Commissioner Matthew Ottone as among “admitted members of the illustrious big money/special interest Refinement Group/Plan for the People.” Ottone did endorse Plan for the People’s No on Measure A campaign; he says he is not a member of either group.
