Report outlines Salinas Valley’s path to sustainability
Friday, April 10, 2009
A report by the prestigious Rocky Mountain Institute outlines a multi-faceted road map for making the Salinas Valley sustainable, from developing a regional composting program to restoring Carr Lake in Salinas.
The report, “Fresh Opportunities in the New Economy, Sustainability Initiatives in the Salinas Valley,” contains 14 recommendations. At the top of the list is retrofitting energy inefficient buildings.
Michael Kinsley, senior consultant for sustainable communities at the Colorado-based institute, says building retrofits are a low-risk investment that recoup construction costs from energy savings. “We need to completely rethink those buildings and think of those as profit centers rather than cost centers,” Kinsley says. “Most buildings in the Salinas Valley are opportunities for business savings and jobs.”
The report will be unveiled Monday at a city of Salinas press conference.
