Big Big Bigness
A bizarre fashion show hits Henry Miller.
Thursday, April 23, 2009
Fabric is forbidden at the first annual Big Big Big Sur Fashion Show at the Henry Miller Library. Instead, the couture on display Thursday, April 30, will be made out of everything from melted records, puzzle pieces and muffin cups, to Coors Light cans, licorice and porno magazines.
“I wanted to have a different kind of fashion show,” says Sara Carr, one of the event coordinators, who admits a boa made of condoms featured in the movie Zoolander inspired her.
Carr, 32, has a large nest of light brown, dreadlocked hair and enthusiasm that sometimes prevents her mouth from keeping up with her rapid thoughts. Her fashion knowhow comes from working in theater costume design. She moved to Big Sur about two years ago from Detroit, Mich., and is the assistant general manager at Fernwood, where the idea for the fashion show was born.
Over drinks with her friend Lisa Goetell, a local website designer, the two joked about how fun it would be to organize a fashion show.
“I was sitting at the bar with Lisa, and was telling her how much I would love to put on a fashion show and she said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Carr says.
Shortly after word about the show got out, excitement began to brew. Now more than 40 people are involved.
“Everyone’s excited and wants to help out in some way,” Carr says.
“It’s important for people to support our local designers,” Goetell adds. “They’re beautiful people.”
In addition to models (of all body types) showcasing the wacky fashion design, there will be an onslaught of entertainment: local artisan vendors, a cash dessert and mimosa bar, a silent auction, fire dancing and live music.
Carr also says there will be some surprises and an after party at Fernwood.
