Gang Wish List
Salinas seeks cash for 25 more cops
Monday, April 27, 2009
Salinas is looking for help from Sen. Barbara Boxer to gain funding for 25 additional police officers, establish a federal investigative office and double the size of the Monterey County Gang Task Force.
During a trip to Washington, DC last week, Boxer asked Salinas representatives to propose three initiatives to get a grasp on the city’s escalating gang violence, said Police Chief Louis Fetherolf at a press conference today.
Fetherolf said the federal office could include agencies such as the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office and be located in the Alisal Marketplace development area where a new police station is proposed. “We’d like to have a federal presence here,” he said.
Salinas is also vying for $10.6 million in stimulus funds from the federal COPS Office to add 25 police officers. The COPS grants are highly competitive, however, Fetherolf said, with more than $8 billion in requests for only $1 billion available. Salinas will know by the end of September if they receive COPS money.
