Double Trouble

Shooters kill two, injure one in Salinas home

Two males walked up to the front door of an East Salinas house last night with guns blazing and killed a 28-year-old man, 36-year-old woman and shot a woman in the leg.

The shooting took place about 9:12pm on the 500 block of Dallas Avenue. This was the fourth homicide in Salinas in the past week, marking 18 slayings for the year.

Witnesses told police that one of the shooters was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and the other a white shirt with red stripes, said Police Chief Louis Fetherolf. They fled in a Nissan Ultima, white or silver, Fetherolf said.

All of the people involved, including the victims, were gang members, Fetherolf said. The chief's statement was disputed, however, by Santiago Martin, the boyfriend of the female homicide victim, who denies that she was a gang member.

In response to the streak of shootings, Fetherolf said he is reassigning personnel to work the streets and help with investigations, adding that the Violence Suppression Unit, the city's gang unit, is working seven days a week.

He reiterated his call for more police officers as he did in his 90-day report. "We are just so strapped for people," Fetherolf said. "We do not have the capacity we need."
