Homicide in Salinas last night marks 19th for 2009

A night after a brazen double homicide, Arturo Navarro Marquez, 30, was shot and killed Monday night in Salinas. The slaying, which took place about 8:45pm at the corner of Noice Drive and Chaparral Street, marks the fifth shooting death in seven days and 19 homicides for the year.

According to police, Marquez was approached by two suspects while walking in the area. One or both of the suspects shot him multiple times in the torso. The shooters possibly fled in a dark-colored SUV that headed east on Chaparral. "It is unknown at this time if the victim was involved with gangs," the new release says, "but this homicide is currently being investigated as gang related."
