Abs Work Out

Monterey Abalone Company gets some national attention.

This week's New York Times Magazine profiled Art Seavey and Trevor Fay, owners of the Monterey Abalone Company on Monterey's Municipal Wharf, describing the unique local flavor of the shellfish and the company, and exploring the stigma of farmed seafood.

In January 2007, the Weekly ducked below the wooden wharf to check out the farm's hand-crafted abalone cages. The story preceded the company's appearance on the Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs" documentary series.

The Weekly followed up with a February 2009 story on the company's new "super abs," which use farmed red abalone to boost the mollusk's color, flavor and sustainability.
