Mystery Leave
Cercone asked DA to investigate case just before put on leave
Friday, August 14, 2009
Seaside Police Chief Steve Cercone requested the Monterey County District Attorney to look into a possible criminal case just before the city put Cercone on leave, an official in the DA's office confirmed today.
The city placed Cercone on paid administrative leave Monday but city officials didn't reveal the reason, citing personnel issues. Before being put on leave, Cercone contacted District Attorney Dean Flippo to investigate a potential criminal matter, Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Hulsey said.
"We are conducting an investigation to determine whether or not there are potential criminal charges," Hulsey said. "We are not conducting an internal investigation."
Hulsey would not specify who or what the DA's office is investigating or the nature of the case. Seaside city officials were not immediately available for comment.
In addition to Cercone, three other members of his command staff were put on leave, according to news reports.
Law enforcement administration veteran Stephen Willis is filling in as Seaside's interim police chief.
