Final Roar

Ted Kennedy, scion of the political family often christened "Camelot," has died tonight.

Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, the so-called "Lion of the Senate," died earlier tonight (Tue, Aug. 25) at age 77, succumbed to the brain cancer he had battled for months.

His legacy as the torchbearer of the storied Kennedy family, in the wake of the assassinations of his brothers John and Robert and the ill-fated Chappaquiddick incident that resulted in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, a female passenger in the car he was driving, has been one of championing the rights of the poor and underprivileged.

Though he wanted to vote on the health care reform currently circulating in Congress, one of his recent triumphs has been the election of Barack Obama, for whom he vigorously campaigned.
