Not So Peaceful

Gunfire erupts during Salinas peace vigil

A 21-year-old man was shot while riding his bike near Closter Park in Salinas on Saturday at the same time family members of homicide victims were holding a vigil for their lost loved ones.

Attendants of A Time For Grieving's 5th Annual Christmas vigil heard 8-10 shots at about 5:30pm, police said. A local hospital reported that the victim arrived at the emergency room bleeding from gunshot wounds. "The investigation revealed that the victim was riding his bike on Towt [Street] when a newer model Nissan 4 door vehicle drove by him and fired several rounds at him," a police statement says. "The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his lower torso and ran away from the area on foot."

The man is expected to survive. The shooting comes near the end of the city's most deadly year and three days after Salinas' 29th gang-related homicide.
