Q: What is the thriftiest and/or most creative gift you’ve given? By Megan Hopkins

What is the thriftiest and/or most creative gift you’ve given?

Asked at Peet’s Coffee in Monterey.

Follow-up: What is your family’s weirdest holiday tradition?

AMY SMOOT | Translator | Monterey

A: A couple of years ago I used plain clear glass Christmas bulbs and got some glass paint and painted them by hand. I also made scarves for people out of polar fleece.

Unjust Dessert: Horrible, god-awful Jello stuff we have every Christmas. It’s pink and kind of fluffy.

DANIEL DUNNE | Retired Army | Monterey

A: I made my niece a pair of leather boots. I also made my nephew a pair but they were too small.

New Orders: We celebrate the ritual of blessing the New Year and the coming light. The rebirth of the New Year.

KAT HORTON | Artist | Monterey

A: I went to an art store and found a bottle cap snake, which had a cork for the head and a tongue that was aluminum.

Hangin’: Every Christmas morning we all go surfing. We’re a hippie, surfing family.
