The Yearly Grind

Christmas tree recycling gets underway.

Christmastime brings lots of opportunities to recycle. Plastic product packaging, wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, wine bottles and more can be placed in curbside recycling bins--and Christmas trees can go right beside them in the green waste bin.

For the next two weeks, residents from Big Sur to Moss Landing can put their trees on the curb or take them to drop-off locations for recycling. Monterey Regional Waste Management expects to grind more than 20,000 trees into mulch.

The district's electric grinder is powered by methane captured from the landfill--making the operation doubly green. Locals can buy the mulch at Last Chance Mercantile in Marina at discounted prices, then spread it over the yard, where it helps conserve water and return nutrients to the soil.

Waste Management and Monterey Disposal are providing the Christmas tree curbside pick-up service for free. Trees should be cut into 3-foot lengths. They can also be dropped off at collection centers throughout the Peninsula from Dec. 26-Jan. 8.
