RESERVOIR FUNDING FLOWS… Pacific Grove Mayor Dan Cort’s brainchild, the proposed stormwater reservoir on David Avenue has come closer to term since our last report. On Dec. 17 the City Council approved $45,000 for Phase II of the reservoir feasibility study, which will look at capturing wet weather flows before they enter the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The Packard Foundation had funded the first phase, also contracted to consultants Malcolm Pirnie Inc., and supporters hope to nab a state grant for the final project. Councilwoman Carmelita Garcia voted against the Phase II allocation, citing the city’s storm water fund deficit. [KA]

HORSE PARK NOT UP TO SNUFF… The National Park Service is not impressed with the level of public access at the Marina Equestrian Center. In a Nov. 26 letter to the city of Marina, the Park Service says the small area of the horse park that is open to the public doesn’t cut it, and the Marina Amateur Radio Contest Station is even less accessible. The city was awaiting response from the Park Service about plans for a dog park and canine college as proposed by the Institute for Canine Studies. From the feds’ perspective, the city has the option of moving forward with the canine institute but if the equestrian center stays put it must be enhanced for public use. [ZS]

LOCAL MEDS HEAD TO AFRICA… Our “Local Heroes” issue in July profiled a Seaside couple, Richard and Gertrude Anyanwu, who provide health care for poor Nigerians through their nonprofit MAHAFA (Medical and Humanitarian Aid for Africa, formerly Africare Meds). Since the article ran, Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy in Monterey has been giving the unexpired meds in its pharmaceutical take-back program to the nonprofit, Richard reports. The donations are so abundant that the Anyanwus will make their biggest delivery ever– 19 pieces of checked baggage, plus carry-ons– during their year-end trip to Nigeria. [KA]
