Marina adopts eco-agreements, forms sustainability group

The Marina City Council last night pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pursue sustainable policies by adopting two eco-agreements, the United Nations Urban Environmental Accords and the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.

The council also voted to set up GO GREENER, a task force group that will prepare a climate action plan for the city to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Urban Environmental Accords outline 21 actions, including energy and waste reduction, for municipalities to complete by 2012, while the Climate Protection Agreement  pushes cities to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets.

The city joins local jurisdictions Pacific Grove, Monterey and Salinas in adopting the symbolic agreements.
