Hard Acts
The Men of Playgirl Magazine hit Hippodrome.
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Banana hammocks are hard to pull off. They’re tiny, stretchy, and remarkably revealing. The look is best left to a professional – namely, a man with rippling pectorals and a cute butt. And unlike the real world, where men with beer bellies and back hair have given the Speedo a bad name, The Men of Playgirl revue have taken itsy-bitsy underwear to a beautiful place.
Hosted this Saturday by 102.5 KDON radio personality Mia Amore at the Hippodrome Nightclub and Lounge, this evening of good ol’ fashioned ogling and objectification features a bevy of hunks. The only Las Vegas revue licensed with Playgirl features a two-hour show long with live vocals, break dancing, and even acrobatics.
It’s a good fit at the ’Drome, according to the club’s owner and GM Jove Shapiro. “The Hippodrome has been home to male and female revues for 30 years,” he says. “Every time we have an event like this, the women go crazy. It’s definitely the perfect ladies’ night out… ”
There’s something for every woman’s taste: Army men, cowboys, smooth operators and gentlemen in tighty whities. The boys put on a show covering culture past (Conan the Barbarian), present (The Businessman), and future (Space hunks? Who knows?). With performers like the Fabio-esque Rick, sexy bald Radekk, and chocolate Tyson, it ultimately may be the audience who tries to pull off the banana hammocks.
The Men of Playgirl Magazine perform 9:30pm Saturday, June 20, at the Hippodrome Nightclub and Lounge, 312 Alvarado St., Monterey. $20; VIP also available. 646-9244.
