Monterey City Council considers layoffs.

The ax drops on Tuesday. Monterey's City Council will likely initiate employee layoffs at its May 19 meeting. If the action is approved by councilmembers, 20 positions will be eliminated or reduced (13 full-time and 7 part-time), effective July 31. Like every other local jurisdiction's—and the state's—Monterey's financial woes keep growing as hotel- and sales-tax revenues decline. The city's latest projected budget shortfall puts Monterey $4 million in the hole this fiscal year, which ends June 30, and $7 million next fiscal year. The Council will consider layoff at 4pm, May 19 in the Council Chambers. Additional budget news and future meeting dates are also available on the city's website.
