Governor stops in Salinas to offer gift cards in exchange for guns
Friday, May 29, 2009
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today a new Salinas program that will allow residents to exchange their firearms (no questions asked) for gift cards.
"Gifts for Guns," modeled after a program in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, comes on the heels of California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention (CalGRIP) grants for Salinas. “There’s no higher priority for government than ensuring public safety, and by providing Salinas with the resources they need, we are fighting gang violence with suppression and prevention efforts that will make communities throughout California safer,” Schwarzenegger said in a prepared statement.
According to a city press release, the Salinas Police Department will accept donated guns at Vineyard Christian Fellowship from 10am to 3pm Saturday June 6. Residents can surrender any firearm, anonymously and without questions to police personnel in exchange for a $50 gift card (rifle), $100 gift card (handgun) or $200 gift card (assault weapon). The gift cards are redeemable at Northridge Mall and were made possible by $20,000 in donations by local business people.
