Not a Burn?
Army: Fire crews 'blacklining' on Fort Ord
Tuesday, November 3, 2009
A white plume of smoke rising from Fort Ord this morning is not a controlled burn but rather "blacklining," in which fire crews "incinerate vegetation stubble that remains after the area was cut," according to a cryptic post on the U.S. Army's website.
The Army announced that no prescribed burns are scheduled through tomorrow, though the clear skies and low wind make for good burning conditions.
In early October the Army set flame to about 295 acres east of Seaside. The controversial practice is designed to clear vegetation so that munitions workers can remove unexploded ordnance from the former military base.
