Flanders on the Block

Carmel voters overwhelmingly approved a sale of the Flanders Mansion Tuesday.

Playing against type, Carmelites—known for their devotion to preservation—turned out in droves to OK a sale of the 1924 English Tudor Revival that the city has owned for nearly 40 years.

The home sits amid the 35-acre Mission Trail Park, and preservationists worry that a sale would interfere with public access to the park's pathways.  The vine covered manse is a jewel, they say, while city officials call it a drain on municipal finances.

The vote does not end the dispute.  A judge is likely to have the final say on the mansion's fate with a ruling expected in December.
