Big Sur Gone Wild
Rep. Farr seeks federal funding for Big Sur wilderness protections.
Friday, November 6, 2009
Today Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) introduced a bill to create federal funding for wilderness protections in Big Sur.
HR 4040, the Big Sur Forest Service Management Unit Act, would:
- Create a separate funding source for the Big Sur division of the Los Padres National Forest,
- Add parts of the Arroyo Seco River, Carmel River, Big Creek, San Antonio River and San Carpoforo Creek to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system,
- Add almost 2,300 acres to the Ventana Wilderness,
- Create a special study area for fire prevention demonstrations in the wildland-urban interface, and
- Establish the Arroyo Seco-Indians Nationao Recreational Trail and the 65-acre Jeff Norman Botanical Area, honoring the Big Sur ecologist and historian who passed away in late 2007.
The bill comes as a boon to environmental groups such as Friends of the River and Ventana Wilderness Alliance.
"This legislation will provide permanent protection for the last free-flowing and wild rivers in the Ventana Region," VWA president Tom Hopkins says.
