Salinas Plugs In

This is not your Governor's Hummer.

Salinas car dealer Frank Yasin wants to sell you a Hummer that is about the size of a Toyota Corolla and retails for about $13,000.  It's made by Custom Carts which recently made a deal with General Motors to name its tiny plug-ins after GM's prestige gas guzzlers. Also on the lot at Frank's Auto Sales are mini Cadillac Escalades and California Roadsters.

Yasin's foray into the plug-in car business comes less than two weeks after Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue announced that the city will be home to an electric car assembly plant by the end of the year.  It also follows an announcement earlier this year that the IRS will offer tax credits of more than $5,000 for anyone who buys a street legal electric car.

If that weren't sweetener enough, Yasin thinks his customers will soon seek relief from high gas prices. What's more, he says, "I just want to try them because everything is slow right now."
