Janet Barnes joins Assembly race

Salinas City Councilwoman Janet Barnes has joined the crowded race for the 28th district state Assembly seat, saying she has an advantage because she is the only Democrat from Monterey County running so far.

"There was no one running from Monterey County and we have 45 percent of the vote and we need to be represented," Barnes says. On Monday she will officially announce her bid to replace former Salinas mayor Anna Caballero, who is vying for the 12 district Senate seat.

Barnes is one of seven candidates to throw their hat in the race. Locally, Watsonville City Councilman Luis Alejo was seen as the Democratic front runner, having picked up some key endorsements. The other candidates are Republicans Allen Lloyd Barker and Richard Shephard, San Benito County Supervisor Jaime De La Cruz, Gilroy school board member Francisco Dominguez, and Hollister Mayor Eugenia Sanchez.

Barnes says she delayed her announcement until the outcome of Measure K was settled, adding that she has time to catch up and surpass other candidates for the June 2010 primary. "I’ve been on it," Barnes says. "It’s just been real quiet."
