'Diocesan Strategy'
Bishop Garcia and COPA to launch peace plan
Thursday, November 12, 2009
Bishop Richard Garcia of the Diocese of Monterey is meeting with local religious organizers tonight for a victims of gang violence vigil and a workshop on the origins of the north vs. south conflict that has claimed 24 lives in Salinas this year.
Communities Organized for relational Power in Action, a coalition of churches, schools and nonprofits, is working with Garcia to call on Central Coast Catholics to prevent gang warfare.
"COPA leaders will present strategic proposals for action involving community policing, parish-level leadership development for parents and families, and increased recreation programs for youth in Salinas and across the region," a news release says.
COPA was one of the missing supporters for Measure K, the Salinas public safety funding tax that failed at the polls last Tuesday. Garcia will present his peace strategy to Rep. Sam Farr and Monterey County politicians at a Nov. 22 COPA convention at the Henry Mello Center in Watsonville.
