Additional Delays

Salinas police station item delayed again

A public hearing concerning the construction of a new $45 million Salinas police station has been put off again. The hearing, which was scheduled for Tuesday, has been continued to Dec. 8.

The City Council originally approved a spending plan that allocated 10 percent of Measure K funds to the police station and cash reserve. But the measure, which likely would have funded 131 new police personnel, was defeated at the polls Nov. 3.

City officials say a new police station is still needed because the facility was built in the '50s and has inadequate space. The proposed location is on East Alisal Street within the Alisal Marketplace development. The city is seeking federal grant money to fund the facility.
