Postal Picketing

Postal union to picket consolidation of Salinas facility

The American Postal Workers Union is planning an informational picket tomorrow to protest the possible move of the Salinas mail processing facility to San Jose. "If we allow this to happen,  mail service would be adversely affected," a union news release says. "Local jobs will be affected and we are not guaranteed jobs elsewhere."

USPS announced in September that it was going to study consolidating the Salinas Processing and Distribution Facility with a similar facility in San Jose, saying it is facing declining mail volume and a projected $7 billion loss this year.

"The USPS has to realign its processing and delivery network to match its resources with its workload," the Postal Service said in a news release. "There is an excess of equipment, staff and facilities to process a declining volume of mail."

The postal union is holding the picket from 9-11am tomorrow at 1011 Post Drive, Salinas.
