Jazz: All That

The Meek, Mendenhall, Edmundson Trio drop top tunes on P.G. for free.

“I feel like I’m stealing, getting to see these guy for free,” says a member of the crowd at Woody’s Bayview Grill. “They should be playing somewhere like the Greek Theater.”

The man’s got a point: The members of The Meek, Mendenhall, Edmundson Trio are some of the best musicians in town. And there is no cover to hear them every Tuesday night.

Tonight’s a special night for drummer Kim Edmundson, who hosts the jam. He’s debuting the final third of his newest trio, tenor sax man Gary Meek.

RLS music instructor Eddie Mendenhall summons the reverberations of Jimmy Smith’s Hammond B-3 on the keyboard, Edmundson bip-baps his high-hat with the soul of Art Blakey, and Meek slides Coltrane-esque arpeggios from his sax with ease.

The jams are indisputably tight for the trio’s live debut, and Meek already appears to be deeply ingrained into the band’s collective musical consciousness. Though Meek moved from Los Angeles in March, it’s evident he and Edmundson have a long-standing musical connection.

“We go back about 20 years,” Edmundson says. “I met Gary when I was doing a run at The Baked Potato in L.A.”

The musicians are enjoying their perpetual live jam session and the chance to share their favorite tunes.

“We will be playing everything from Herbie Hancock to the straight blues,” Meek says.

“But we don’t play ballads,” Edmundson jokes.

THE MEEK, MENDENHALL, EDMUNDSON TRIO plays 8-11pm Tuesdays at Woody’s Bayview Grill, 125 Ocean View Blvd., Pacific Grove. Free. 649-6800.
