Rancho’s Half-Off Sale…It’s been more than a year since home prices dipped below half their former values in Marina, Seaside and Salinas, but—in line with realtor predictions—higher-end properties have been slower to sag. Now we’re seeing the recession catch up with luxe estates. An Oct. 3 auction for the seven remaining sites in the ultra-exclusive Santa Lucia Preserve subdivision (aka Rancho San Carlos) sets minimum bids at $430,000 to $970,000 for homesites normally priced $900,000 to $3 million-plus. The sale will be held at 4 pm at the Preserve Hacienda. For info, contact Albert Burney Auction Co. at 800-434-1654. [KA]
Current Event…The mysterious movements of Monterey Bay’s currents have inspired authors and frightened fishermen, delivered sardines and disappeared divers. But a team of scientists has taken one step closer to understanding the apparent chaos. A new report finds bay’s dispersal patterns are guided by a shifting, hidden structure that determines whether floating debris remain near shore or sweep into the open ocean, according to a Sept. 28 New York Times article. The results of the 9-year-old study may help contain ocean pollution, track oil spills and improve the precision of marnine search-and-rescue operations. [KA]
House Surfing…Anna Caballero will run for the seat of soon-to-be-termed-out state Sen. Jeff Denham in the June primary, her campaign announced Sept. 23. The two-term state Assemblywoman and former Salinas mayor and councilwoman is gunning for the Democratic nomination in the 12th district, which covers a largely agricultural area spanning southern Salinas Valley and San Joaquin Valley. Denham, a Republican, has held the office since 2002. Ceres mayor Anthony Cannella is seeking the Republican nomination for the seat. [KA]
OIS Express…A Salinas police officer killed a knife-wielding, 29-year-old man Sept. 24. Lance Miraco shot and killed Jesus Altimirano Cruz after police say Cruz raised his knife during an evacuation attempt of residents inside a home on the 800 block of La Cuesta Court. Police Chief Louis Fetherolf said Cruz was not from Salinas and had been renting a room in the house on the for about two months. Fetherolf declined to say what drove Cruz to grab the knife or whether he had any mental illness or criminal history. [ZS]
