Chinatown Chow: The buiding @risK art gallery wants to call its new home was a Chinese resturant during the historic district's hey day.
At Risk of Closure
@risK art gallery temporarily closes

Normally on nights of First Fridays Art Walk in Salinas, the @risK art gallery hosts edgy exhibits across the railroad tracks from Oldtown. Tonight is the exception.
The art gallery, which is operated by Dorothy's Place's Franciscan Workers of Junipero Serra, shuttered at the end of last month due to dried-up funding. The Franciscan Workers have requested to move across the street into a vacant building owned by the Salinas Redevelopment Agency.
The building is a former Chinese restaurant right next to the community garden. "We recognize the contribution the gallery has made in bringing more people here to Soledad Street so we'd just like to keep it going," says Robert Smith, Dorothy's director.
Don Reynolds, redevelopment manager, says the organization has requested a six-month use with free rent. "I'm hoping that they will have to shut down for only a couple weeks and we can get them back open," Reynolds says.
Reynolds says a date hasn't been set for City Council consideration. Smith hopes to be open in time for November's art walk.
