Sheriff candidate Garcia suspended after criticizing helicopter

Sheriff Cmdr. Fred Garcia, who is challenging Mike Kanalakis in the June 2010 election, was suspended today shortly after he publicly criticized Kanalakis for wanting to buy a helicopter.

Cmdr. Mike Richards said Garcia was suspended today pending an internal investigation, declining to specify what the probe pertains to or whether it is related to Garcia's opposition to the helicopter. Garcia also said he couldn't comment on his suspension.

In today's Weekly, Garcia said the $660,000 grant-funded chopper is "bells and whistles, and we are not focused on our priority. And that’s police work."

Garcia also aired his concerns in  letter to the Board of Supervisors. On Tuesday the supes sent the Sheriff's request back to the Budget Committee because they wanted more financial commitment from cities and a more detailed business plan. Garcia sent out a press release applauding the supervisors' decision.
