Bishop Garcia calls on churches to pray for solution to gang violence

Bishop Richard Garcia of the Catholic Diocese of Monterey has called on Central Coast clergy to pray for a solution to gang violence, the Diocese announced today.

In a letter to Catholic  priests in Santa Cruz, San Benito, Monterey, and San Luis Obispo counties Garcia  said: “I am very aware of and troubled by a disease, a cancer of vast proportions, affecting and killing so many youth in gang related murders and violence.  This cannot continue. It will not disappear until concerned institutions, especially the Church, establish focused strategies to work together as one body.”  Garcia has directed churches to focus  Nov.1, All Saints Day, on gang violence, and the Diocese is working with COPA to organize a Nov. 12 seminar to develop a peace strategy.

The churches' involvement comes as Salinas' homicide tally has grown to 24 and the city is counting on a tax measure to hire more police officers.
