Chamber Danger
Council votes against $15,000 bailout for Marina Chamber of Commerce
Wednesday, September 2, 2009
After requesting $15,000 from the city to stay afloat, the Marina Chamber of Commerce walked away last night without a cent. The City Council rejected bailing out the Chamber of Commerce with a one-time grant to cover its operating expenses for the rest of the year.
Mayor Bruce Delgado says he made two motions: one to give the chamber a $6,000 loan and another for $3,000. But both motions failed 2-2, with Councilman Dave McCall voting to support the chamber and council members Ken Gray and Frank O'Connell voting against the motions, Delgado says. (Councilman Jim Ford recused himself from the item due to a conflict of interest).
The chamber, which was hit by members not paying dues, will now have to collect donations. "Their option is to pass the hat," Delgado says.
