Carmelita Garcia joins Bill Kampe in bid for P.G. mayor's seat.

Pacific Grove Councilwoman Carmelita Garcia is gunning for the mayor position vacated by Dan Cort Aug. 31, according to a press release sent Wednesday afternoon.

Councilman Bill Kampe has also said he'd be willing to serve as mayor, setting up a likely face-off between the two at the council's Sept. 16 meeting.

Mayor Pro Tem Vicki Stilwell seemed the natural choice for acting mayor, but Stilwell has said she's not interested in the post. Nor is Councilman Alan Cohen or Councilwoman Lisa Bennett.

Stilwell has said she'd favor Kampe for mayor. Bennett and Cohen say they'll keep an open mind for the council meeting, and Councilwoman Deborah Lindsay could not be reached for comment.

CORRECTION:  This story was updated from the original posting. Alan Cohen had previously said he thinks Kampe would make a good mayor, but that was before Garcia's bid. Both are qualified, he clarifies: "I'm just letting everybody lobby me."
