Police release knife-wielding man's name

Salinas police identified the man killed in Thursday's officer-involved shooting as 29-year-old Jesus Altimirano Cruz.
Police Chief Louis Fetherolf announced today that Lance Miraco was the officer that shot and killed the knife-wielding man.
Cruz was not from Salinas and had been renting a room in the house on the 800 block of La Cuesta Court for about two months, he said. Fetherolf declined to say what drove Cruz to grab the knife or whether he had any mental illness or criminal history.
Miraco shot Cruz after he entered an upstairs room where officers were trying to evacuate residents from the house using a ladder. "Believing he, and the residents he was trying to protect were in grave danger, the officer shot the suspect several times," the police statement says.
Although the department's internal investigation is not complete, Fetherolf said: "It appears there was no impropriety on the part of the officer."
