Monday, April 5, 2010
Salinas police arrested a 19-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man for battery on a police officer and other charges Friday night after a bar fight at Chapala's in Salinas.
According to police: "Officers came upon a battery in progress between Stephanie Valenzuela (a.k.a. Bernal),19, and another female. When officers tried to control Valenzuela she pushed an officer. Valenzuela was taken into custody.
"Esteban Pineda, 31, attempted to intervene and grabbed an officer's arm. Another officer was able to take Pineda into custody.
"Officers later learned that Valenzuela had started a fight in the bar and had been removed by security when officers saw Valenzuela fighting someone else. Valenzuela made gang related threats to people in the area as well. Valenzuela was on probation for similar crimes. Both Valenzuela and Pineda were taken to jail."
The next night a 41-year-old was punched near Chapala's after leaving the bar and trying to intervene in an argument between his relative and a group of men, police said.
"The victim fell to the ground and struck his head on the cement sidewalk," police said in a statement. "When officers arrived the victim was still down and unconscious. The victim had a large cut on his scalp and was airlift to a trauma center in San Jose. He was later released after treatment. Officers are investigating the crime to locate suspects and additional witnesses."
