Endowment-funded plan to address safety, health care in East Salinas
Tuesday, April 6, 2010
A California Endowment-backed initiative in East Salinas will aim to keep families safe from violence and provide health care coverage to all children. The Building Healthy Communities plan will be presented Wednesday night, after 10 months of development by a steering committee made up of community organizations, residents, government agencies, and youth.
Endowment Program Officer Lauren Padilla-Valverde says the committee relied on input from residents, through surveys and focus groups, to pick what health issues to address. "It wasn't the steering committee that came up with priorities," Padilla-Valverde says. "They were the vehicles of providing the information and allowing the residents to make that decision."
The plan will be presented at 6:30pm at Jesse Sanchez Elementary School, 910 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas. The plan will act as a road map for a 10-year initiative that will pump millions of dollars into Salinas' poorest neighborhoods.
