Surfs Up
Marina to honor two surfers for rescuing teens.
Tuesday, April 20, 2010
The Marina City Council tonight will commend two surfers for helping rescue two Hollister teens, who nearly drowned in 10-foot waves at Marina State Beach on March 28. The council will recognize pro surfer Wayne Kelly and Brian Simpson, who works as an imaging technician at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
The Coast Guard rescued all four surfers more than a half mile from the shore after the two teens were swept out by ocean currents and escalating waves.
"Before I hit the water, I thought I'd be just jamming out, grabbing the kids and getting back in. I had no idea it would get so serious," Kelly said in a prepared statement. "The ocean's a really intense environment, especially for people that are not used to it. Even the most experienced waterman can get in trouble."
