Swearing-in

Carmel election victors took the oath of office Tuesday, April 20.

Well-wishers packed Carmel City Council chambers Tuesday as six-term Mayor Sue McCloud, along with 16-year City Council veteran Paula Hazdovac, and newbie Jason Burnett were officially installed in office.

Burnett reported that voter turn-out was up 20 percent from the previous election, and announced the creation of a website where citizens can register comments and complaints, and later track the city's response.

Amid the congratulations, McCloud sounded a note of caution, warning that the city's fate is tied to the national economy, which determines whether tourists spend dollars in Carmel. The city's budget process is underway; the city council is set to vote on next year's spending plan at the end of May.

A bagpiper dressed in full regalia capped off the event, and was to accompany the newly elected officials and their guests to a party at Carmel's Cypress Inn.
