Maldonado Gets Nod

Abel Maldonado to be sworn in as Lieutenant Governor Tuesday, April 27.

Maldonado finally won the Lieutenant Govenorship on a 25-7 vote Monday,  April 26.

This is his second nomination to the post vacated by John Garamendi. When Maldonado failed to win confirmation in the Assembly in February, Gov. Schwarzenegger renominated him.

Former Santa Cruz Assemblyman John Laird has said he's running for Maldonado's Central Coast Senate seat, as is Republican Assemblyman, Sam Blakeslee from San Luis Obispo.  The district, which was majority Republican when Maldonado was elected, is now majority Democratic. It is one of two competitive districts in the state, which could turn from red to blue this fall, potentially giving Democrats the super-majority they need to pass a state budget without Republican votes.
