Game On With stunning views of the Monterey Bay, Seaside’s Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses (899-7271) have above-par green fees for active-duty military stationed on the Monterey Peninsula. Military personnel pay anywhere from $11.60 to $27.30 – depending on their pay grade and the time of week they choose to play – to hit the green on the more challenging Bayonet holes or the relatively open Black Horse course.
Bombs Away Stumbling distance from DLI and NPS in the downtown and Cannery Row entertainment corridors, military discounts are offered on fun of the liquid variety at London Bridge Pub (373-1353), Jose’s Underground Lounge (655-4419) and Blue Fin Billiards (717-4280).
Black and White and Read all Over Nothing says “I love this town” better than a personalized souvenir, and what will stay with a good soldier long after the stay in Monterey is a distant memory? Gold Coast Tattoo offers 10 percent off all ink to active military, open seven days a week at 639 Lighthouse (642-9404).
Pool Party Any local member of the military can spend Sunday afternoon playing half-price pool on one of the 12 tables at Easy Street Billiards (Monterey, 333-0825).
Neighborhood Bar Duffy’s Tavern (644-9811) is as close as a bar can be to DLI – right outside the High Street Gate – without actually being on the grounds. For local military, Duffy’s is a home away from the base, serving up a Monday night $7.95 all-you-can-eat Spaghetti dinner and a Tuesday Pint Night – buy a pint of beer, get one free.
Southern Accent The good folks at Henry’s BBQ (Monterey, 646-6999) say local military hailing from the South flock to the restaurant for its pulled pork and sweet tea. A 10 percent discount for active-duty military helps make the establishment a prime spot for those at the nearby DLI.
