Unexpected ways to stretch your student dollar and fill your stomach.

Bagel For It Marina Donuts & Bagels (883-4527) touts the O-shaped savory delights for just three quarters. Bonus: They are damn good bagels, including the superb spinach and jalapeño cheddar, which need no topping. Really. A number of local eateries stock up here. You should too.

Buck Breakfast For a while Tommy’s Restaurant (Marina, 582-9503) didn’t have a phone. But they’ve always had this jaw-dropper: eggs, toast, hash browns and coffee for a dollar. So what if the coffee shouldn’t be served in prison. The other elements may not earn A grades, but they pass.

Alpha Dog We don’t normally plug national chains, but Costco (Sand City, 899-1256, Salinas 751-0382) deserves credit for keeping the cost on this all-kosher half-pound behemoth (or Polish dog) steady at $1.50 – including a drink. If you’re not a member, be sly like Prince and go “in through the out door.”

Morning Madness A morning meal at Randy’s Sandwich Shop (Monterey, 375-9161) for $2? OK, the sandwich is really $4. But the massive wad of fresh egg, sausage or bacon or ham, plus condiments on a nice soft sesame roll is big enough for two freshmen. There’s a reason the area’s working class pack this tiny place.
