ARTISANA GALLERY Cheryl Kampe paints watercolor landscapes and studies of local trees in her exhibition “The Trees of Life,” which visually whisper recollections of dreams, wind-swept, romantic and strong, with layers of tactile colors that suggest the solid bark and leaves of her subjects more than it does the malleability of her medium. Wobber writes/creates paper poetry scrolls that recall the Japanese fortune strips that are tied to many temples. ARTISTIC HANGUPS Some of Disney’s best work would not have been the same without Ron Dias. Get to see some of his work up close at the art show and see how he contributed to classic films. Better yet get to meet the actual animation model for Disney’s Tinker Bell. CARL CHERRY CENTER Designed for General Use: Victoria May uses an array of materials – lab ware, paper, glass, metal, beeswax – to explore the realms of memory, perception and human nature, “giving tangible form to the psychological wiring of the human mind.” This exhibit is a pseudo-scientific anthropological study, lending seemingly ordinary objects take on oddly different meanings and allusions in this woman’s hands. MARJORIE EVANS GALLERY Painted Ballerinas: Kim Weston inherited and faithfully carries on an American photographic legacy that is seminal in the field. But in addition to the classic and sensual black-and-white nudes and still lifes of that tradition, he dabbles in paint. These works add a painterly abstractedness to his photographic tableaus of ballerinas. APODACA GALLERY Informalists Reunion Show: The Informalists used to meet in coffee shops in the ‘90s to discuss their artwork and decide where they would paint that day. The group of visionaries created a new form of plein aire work that is expressionist and highly contemporary. Having dispursed, the members now reunite for a Reunion Show at Galerie Plein Aire, which originally opened to showcase the group in 1998, and the neighboring Gallery Apodaca, owned by Informalist Johnny Apodaca. The pieces on display in this show are colorful, moody and expressive, ranging from Cyndra Bradford’s stylized, dramatic prints of horses in local landscapes to Apodaca’s bold, meditative abstracts. CARMEL MISSION E. Charlton Fortune was a California Impressionist painter who achieved acclaim with her lyrical landscapes, but after studying with Armin Hansen in the 1920s, she settled in Monterey and joined the Carmel Art Association and Monterey Guild, where she created liturgical (religious) works for the remainder of her career. This exhibit, The Liturgical Arts of E. Charlton Fortune and the Monterey Gujild 1828-1958, assembles key works from this phase, including previously unseen works like “Serra’s First Mass at Monterey,” in the form of ceramics, textiles, metalworks, woodcarvings, paintings and photographs from Fortune’s personal albums, provided by heirs of August Gay, Mission San Juan Bautista, Monterey Museum of Art and various other galleries. MOUNTAINSONG GALLERIES Tom O’Neal and Pamelina Hovnatanian: Two heavy-weights of rock n’roll art touch down in Carmel. RED MILL Dale Lefler shows his watercolors, which he took up in 1986 and has shown at Alvarado Gallery, the Carmel Foundation and Pacific Grove Art Center. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The part you won’t see and will have to listen to Lefler about, is his storied first career as a dancer. He served as assistant choreographer for Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, Lucille Ball, Mickey Rooney. He worked with Gene Kelly and director Vincent Minelli in the 1943 MGM film Best Foot Forward. He studied under Ted Shawn, who Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 1933, making it the longest running dance festival – period. He established a dance studio in Monterey in 1953. RIP SQUEAK GALLERY CARMEL The husband and wife team of locals Leonard Filgate and Susan Yost-Filgate created the Rip Squeak series of imaginative and colorful childrens books in 1997. HIMALAYAN THANGKA ART GALLERY The Tibetan thangka art in this new gallery next to Youth Arts Collective is done by Santoshi Lama and her family – as it has been for four generations – when they were living in Nepal. Thangka is a highly detailed watercolor art that tells the story of gods and goddesses in Buddhist lore. One must be trained in the rules and discipline just to build up the patience to do this type of art (it can take two to three months, at eight hours a day, for a master to complete one work), and once started, a work must be finished. COASTAL IMPRESSIONS STUDIO GALLERY In addition to Moss Landing’s Elkhorn Slough landing the cover of VIA, the AAA magazine, the ocean-hugging hamlet can boast a new gallery to bolster its slow, steady transition from antiquing mecca to artistic outpost. Barry Marshall’s sudio/gallery opened discreetly last month with 50-something of his oil and acrylic landscapes and seascapes he’s painted in the last three years. HAUTE ENCHILADA GALLERY UNO The dual galleries of the Haute Enchilada Cafe’ (La Galeria and Galeria Dos across the street) host a gathering of over 30 artists from all over the Central Coast working in a wide variety of medias. ALTERNATIVE CAFÉ Beautiful Dreamers: Right on schedule, the Alt Cafe throws up their next show, displaying three artists who work in that underground culture idiom. What that means is that Paul Torres, from Chile, was influenced by comic books and horror and Western films, honed at Otis Parsons, with a stint in the U.S. Army, and worked on the Ghostbusters cartoon show and the movie Scrooged; Charles Glaubitz, who grew up on the Mexican side of the Tiguana/San Diego border, was into surfing, breakdancing, BMXing and drawing as a kid, refined his art at CCAC in SF, and has done work for the SF Examiner, Seattle Stranger, Converse and the L.A. SEASIDE CITY CENTER New Enterprise: The beacon of modern art that was fine art base, a nonprofit that set up shop in Sand City in March 2009 and curated progressive art shows and gatherings before closing its doors in just under a year, is back. “We don’t need to run a physical space to advance the fine art base mission,” read Elizabeth O’Malley’s notice of the closure of the happening art gallery. They set up shop in the little-used retail space at Seaside’s City Center for the first of a three-part installation called New Enterprise. Phase 1, which opened Friday, May 14, features artists Kris Cowen, San Francisco’s Zachary Royer Scholz and dlwilkinson, showing new work that also reappropriates “sites and materials” in new ways and contexts. Recycling was a big mission of the former fine art base; seems it still is.
