Salinas public libraries will stay open for limited hours during the holidays, despite previous plans to close down through the New Year

Salinas will open two of its three public libraries for limited hours during the holidays, despite earlier plans to close down entirely until January 3.
In hopes to save an estimated $150,000, most city employees were offered a ten-day leave through January 2, says Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue. When 42 of 46 library staffers opted in for the voluntary time off, as reported by the Herald, the libraries were left in a precarious position to keep up operations. “We ended up with unintended consequence of the libraries being closed,” explains Donohue.
Library Director Elizabeth Martinez personally asked staff members if they could work for a few hours throughout the holidays to maintain at least limited hours. She found enough willing staffers that the Cesar Chavez and John Steinbeck branches remain open from December 27 through December 30, from noon and 4 p.m.
