Sheriff candidate says he won't open internal affairs file to media

Sheriff candidate Fred Garcia, who just announced Monday that he will sign a waiver releasing the full details of two internal investigations that led to his recommended demotion, has changed his tune after Sheriff Mike Kanalakis refused to absolve him from future punishment.

“I’m not going to go [on KSBW] with my hands handcuffed and only say certain things the sheriff wants to hear,” Garcia says. The two rivals were scheduled to go on KSBW on Feb. 17 but Garcia says that prospect is now dead in the water.

In other head-spinning developments, Kanalakis, who told the Weekly last week that he would act as the Skelly officer in Garcia's upcoming disciplinary hearing, says he will now send the matter to Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin. The Skelly hearing is set for Feb. 24. Read more in tomorrow's Weekly .
