Letters to the Editor for Feb 11, 2010

KEEP THE FAITH

I’m a regular reader of the Weekly. The “Local Spin” article (“Dreams Deferred,” Feb. 4-10) was too negative.

I see the glass half full; not half empty. Remember this:

1. Candidate Obama (2008) said his agenda would take time. This recession is just a few Richter points below the Great Depression of the 1930s!!

2. Americans are spoiled. No patience. Change takes time.

3. Obama is a rookie president. He is learning. Never been president before. Just like a rookie baseball star – their third year in the “Bigs” usually bring star results.

4. Republicans are mean and stubborn.

5. Republicans are mean and stubborn. D. Lawson | Salinas

COMMISSION OMISSIONS?

Your (“Best Of”) ballot is missing quite a few important services: best doctor, lawyer, dentist, gardener, housekeeper, handyman, general contractor, tree service, housepainter, optometrist, roofer, vet, etc. People need referrals for those categories more frequently than “best tattoo parlor” or “best surf shop.” Joe Snyder | Monterey

NAME GAME

I see Squid can’t resist name-calling to anyone, especially Tea-Baggers, who don’t agreewith the ultra-progressive agenda of the Obama administration (“Squid Fry – Tea-ing Off,” Feb. 4-10). Instead of name-calling, how about a real discussion of cap and trade? But then you’d have to know what you’re talking about, which would probablybe difficult for Squid. Dennis Harper | Salinas

JUSTICE – OR JUST US?

Once there was the legal fiction about slavery, that a person was property. Now five justices on the Supreme Court have established a new legal fiction, that property is a person. The five-member conservative majority has triggered another outrageous, unconscionable definition that abuses the Constitution, justice anddemocracy. Elected officials everywhere should speak out and undo thislegal malfeasance. George Riley | Monterey

CORRECTION: Last week’s news story (“Trawl Brawl,” Feb. 4-10) incorrectly identified the halibut species in Monterey Bay. The local species is California halibut; if caught with bottom trawling, it is on the Seafood Watch “good alternative” list.
