The Buzz

New news on old news.

Generally Confused…The Monterey County Planning Commission was—yet again—set to look into the county general plan's crystal ball on Feb. 10, but the meeting was mysteriously postponed until Feb. 24. The Weekly is running out of holidays to refer to when GPU5’s final environmental impact report will arrive. [ZS]

Plea and F-You…Nathan Augustine, 28, copped to last July's firebomb attacks on two P.G. businesses. The hometown son allegedly went Molotov on Creative Visions because tattoo artists refused to ink his chest with a swastika and an image of Barack Obama in the crosshairs, and two days later bombed Lattitudes because a black assistant manager wouldn’t hire him. Enrollment Lockdown…CSU Monterey Bay has already turned away more than 1,000 qualified students for next school year. University President Dianne Harrison said the campus will reduce full-time equivalent students from roughly 4,300 to 3,950 in response to the CSU system's bummer of a rollback. [ZS]

Maldonado for Gov Lite….The Senate Rules Committee voted 4-0 to give Senator Abel Maldonado, Gov. Schwarzenegger’s nominee to fill the Lt. Governor’s seat, the nod last week. He faced questioning in Assembly Rules Feb. 9 and a possible floor vote in either or both houses. [RU]

Street Prez…Obama Way, 93955? The city of Seaside invites public comment on adding Obama Way as a "commemorative" street sign below existing signs for Broadway Avenue from Del Monte to Gen. Jim Moore boulevards. Postal mail would deliver to either street name. [KA]

Weed Windfall?...State tax officials estimate the state could snag $105 million in taxes on medical pot sales—far more than the current $8 million annual take. State Sen. Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) plans to introduce a bill to make dispensaries and others in the pot supply chain pay up. [RU]

Roadslide Attraction…The southbound lane of Highway 1, about 200 yard south of Lucia Lodge, slipped into the sea over the weekend of Feb. 6. Cal Trans expects to shore up the crumbling stretch when the rainy season is over. For now, cars are sharing the northbound lane. [KA]

Foam Phase-Out…On Feb. 4, Seaside became the fifth Peninsula city to ban Styrofoam to-go containers. To help offset the extra cost of compostables, Monterey Regional Waste Management District is offering free eco-friendly packaging starter kits to restaurants: www.mrwmd.org or 384-5313. [KA]
