Maldonado Redux
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will re-nominate Abel Maldonado.
Friday, February 12, 2010
State Assembly leaders thought they'd rejected Maldonado Thursday Feb 11. when his confirmation failed to garner 41 votes (an Assembly majority) , even though members voted 37-35 in favor. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger disagreed, and threatened to swear in Maldonado anyway, arguing that a majority of those who voted okayed his nominee. Assembly Democrats shot back with a threat to sue. And, late Friday, the Governor took a different tack, announding his intention to renominate the Central Coast senator.
Once he makes the nomination official, Maldonado's confirmation process starts all over again, giving the legislators another 90 days to confirm or not.
Assemblymembers Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) cast aye votes for the nominaton.
Republican political consultant Allan Hoffenblum says the odds favor Maldonado's confirmation. "I don't think they're going to get away with 'I can't make up my mind."
