Waves of Protest
Fishermen rally against regulations, in D.C. and Monterey.
Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Today fishermen and their supporters, under the banner "United We Fish," protested in Washington, D.C. for reform of regulations they say are making it nearly impossible to make a living harvesting seafood from domestic waters. A particularly sore point is the Magnuson-Stevenson Act, which tightened restrictions in early 2007.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, supporters of the movement held a similar action at Window on the Bay Park. Among those in attendance were Assemblyman Bill Monning (D-Carmel), Monterey City Councilwoman Nancy Selfridge, and fisherman Jiri Nozicka of Royal Seafoods, who helped organize the rally through his group, People United for American Commercial Fisheries.
Here's YouTube footage from the Monterey rally, by cetacean researcher Sarah Graham.
